Juvenile convict in Dec 16 gangrape to walk free on Sunday as Delhi HC refuses to intervene

The juvenile convicted in the December 16, 2012 gang rape will walk free on Sunday as scheduled as the Delhi High Court refused to intervene in the case.

The court asked the Juvenile Justice Board to talk to his family. It said since the convict has already undergone the maximum punishment of three years under the JJ Act, he cannot be kept at the juvenile home beyond December 20.

The ruling comes three years after the incident in which the victim was gang raped by six men on a moving bus in the national capital. The incident had sparked widespread condemnation from all quarters and propelled thousands of people to come out on the streets.

In the wake of the incident, a stringent legislation against sexual assault on women was unanimously passed in both houses of Parliament.
