Police in Spain arrested a British man accused of raping a woman at a popular resort after he repeatedly resisted arrest and headbutted one of the officers on Friday.
Mallorca police said the suspect, a 26-year-old British national, assaulted a woman inside a resort in Santa Posa, a coastal town on the western island of Majorca not far from Magaluf, a popular party destination for European travelers.
The man reportedly resisted arrest, putting up such a fight that he ended up headbutting one of the officers who had been called to the scene, according to the US Sun.
A friend of the alleged victim reported the assault to a receptionist at the hotel who called the police around 7 p.m. Friday evening.
While recounting what happened to officers, the friend told police that the man tried to force her into the hotel room after he allegedly raped her friend.
Following the attack, the victim was taken to the Son Espases hospital.
The nationality of the woman allegedly raped has not been revealed.
Officers with the Civil Guard arrested the man Friday.
It was not immediately clear if the suspect has already appeared in court and whether he has been remanded in custody or released on bail pending an ongoing investigation.
Last July, another British tourist was arrested on suspicion of rape in Magaluf, not far from where the most recent assault took place.
The woman told Spanish authorities that she had passed out in the man’s hotel room after she “blacked out” and later woke up to find him “on top of her.”
Magaluf is considered to be a popular party destination for European travelers, especially British vacationers, though its reputation has been on the decline due to physical violence and rowdy behavior from tourists, according to the Daily Mail.
Sexual assault claims coming from such resorts have also been on the rise in recent years.
